Through the Screen and Down the Rabbit Hole

Why the Internet Makes Us Addicted to Attention and Make-Believe

“Clout chasing” is like a drug: addictive, intoxicating, and frequently destructive. It lures people in, motivating them to do whatever is necessary to chase attention and validation. The internet, like Alice in Wonderland, is an eccentric universe where people create alternate selves—selves they may never be able to inhabit in their everyday lives.

The internet is a platform on which illusion thrives and where fantasy often eclipses, or is prioritized over, reality. This is precisely what makes it so awesome and dangerous; it offers limitless opportunity and creativity but blurs the lines between fairy tales and real life. Everything is in the digital wonderland. Not everyone is who they claim to be. I most definitely identify as the Mad Hatter.
